Forest Curse by AssasinMonkey Forest Curse by AssasinMonkey
Time Lapse: [link]

Approx time: 8 hours

The Forest Curse. Bound by nature.

This was an extension of the Saturday Livestream [APR 13-14] here: [link]
Basically from wood, to wooden ponies... or TimberPonies. Took a bit longer than expected, but... I was streaming, talking, procrastinating, etc. the usual :P

Also tried to take a lower angle, where the ground is basically barely visible, or not at all, as initial idea, which turned into this.

Beautiful painting. :) So, an actual timber pony, instead of a timber wolf? I think that's a first. :)

That's like 3 of my works used in an EQD post header within 1... day :XD:
I did not expect that

omg this looks so much like the tree ponies from my fic greenwood(about a tree spirit taking the form of a pony and a pony who died but was turned into a "tree pony") and how the tree spirit greenwood wants to overthrow all animals

It's the third time that I type up a comment to this. I hope that this time, I WON'T FORGET TO SUBMIT IT. ARGH :icontwilightinsaneplz:

I really like how this turned out. The experiment with the wooden texture sure led to a spectacular result. Quite useful for other purposes, too.
The "focus beam" effect centered on the pony here is one of the most interesting parts about the picture. I like the effect of the pony, or even just most of the pony, being in the focus like that and the rest being blurry. The falling leaves add a good sense of perspective. I love the lighting here, with the way it's reflected on the canopy of the clearing, the forest floor and the pony itself. Nice use of them blurry strokes to suggest the shapes of trees, grass, undergrowth and more.
About the pony itself, I love the sheer detail on the wooden textures. The cracks and the layers of wood are reflected in a great way here. I particularly like how the light falls onto it and highlights those things, as well as those branches and leaves, both on the body and the head. That, and the translucence of these leaves is a great touch. Your use of shading to reflect how well those parts are lit as well as their volume is very impressive. I also have to compliment the dynamism of the pose and the chosen angle helping that impression. Finally, I really like the way you made the eyes: that green glow and the way it illuminates the eye socket is impressive and sets much of the tone for the whole pony.
Great job!
Oh, and also, the wooden structure of the body will serve as a good exercise for you-know-what. So will that glowing eye, although in that other case the glow would be less powerful. But that's for another day. For now, well done!

You just wanted an excuse to triple check the comment when you double checked the comment :P

So nice to read all the things you picked up on. And especially since they'll be of use for certain incoming works
There's certainly things about wood that apply to other materials as well. I quite enjoy being able to do "random" patterns while still retaining the sense of wood, in this case.
Light also always gets my attention, from global lighting to smaller ones.

Thanks for the comment :D

Huh, reminds me of the leaf shades from FoE, but this version has more substance. Is this akin to actual timberwolves? Of whom we know now can assimilate more of their own kind or other underbrush for a combined purpose?

I had not really decided on an exact backstory, keeping it a bit open, with the only defined part being the "Curse".
I assume it's either the pony transformed or mutated into this or something similar to the Timberwolves, a spirit or magic (from a past pony) which animates the different parts to resemble a pony. Which could indeed mean it's able to assimilate others :D

Could be a poor soul from long ago, when the Everfree Castle was in its prime and Nightmare Moon was rampaging with Celestia? Nobody knows canonically how the Everfree became "...Dangerous, and just ain't natural!" a.k.a cursed. XD
