Applejack-O-Lantern by AssasinMonkey Applejack-O-Lantern by AssasinMonkey
More Applejack! More for the upcoming Nightmare Nights of course. Just had to do this one, couldn't resist :P
Finished from the previous progress on this I uploaded here: fav.me/d6rph6h
Decided to go with a warmer colour instead of the night

Not exactly an outfit like my previous, although it might be possible as an outfit?
Anyhow, it's more in the direction of tales. Something like the headless horseman, but then with an Apple, having a bit of fun playing around with relatively simple environment and effects.

Maybe I'll take some time for another AJ Nightmare Night piece.

Approx Time: 7-8 Hours

PS: Wallpaper format!

I think it was a good call to go with the much warmer colour scheme.
It came out really nice! Good job with putting the detail work where it matters, as hinting to details can be that much more powerful than the actual details themselves.

Yes, the detail focus is something I often suggest to others and it's always nice to know those words actually hold something. And get noticed, which is great to hear, thank you!
The warmer colours helped quite a bit with keeping AJs colours intact I think, while still keeping enough focus on her :)

For sure! When I see a painting that catches my eye,
I tend to slow down and take a closer gander.
It's a nice habit, as I try to piece together why I like it and wether it could've been even better.
This way I can pick up some stuff to try out myself and I'm assuming the artist would like to get
some feedback on what works and suggestions to improve the piece. I know I enjoy the feedback I may get.
I'll stay around and give my two cents whenever I have something worth saying. I like a lot of the stuff you make :D

I really appreciate the time you take for those comments :) It's always very interesting to see others' perspectives and to hear what their ideas are.
And its a joy to see when I in turn can inspire or cause an idea to happen, as it has happened to me with other artists as well.

I also want to be open too share things like WIPs, time lapse videos or just plain fails on my part to hopefully help contribute to that environment.
Also seeing others trying and looking into new things keep me experimenting as well, fun to be had everywhere :)

I've done a couple of time lapses in my time as well,
but haven't recently due to lack of appropriate software after I got a new laptop.
I love watching the working process of others, as there's so many different approaches
and you get the chance to take a peek into the mind of another artist.
It's really brave to show stuff you yourself consider a failure, I know I'd have a hard time doing that myself.

I kinda want to do a time lapse again soonish now, but I need to get an idea first.
Whenever I stream or record myself working I get so self conscious it's silly.
Just because of this I guess I should do it more often, pushing comfort zones and all that.
It shouldn't be a problem to paint in front of a bunch of people :P

There was once a pony, that loved apples, then she died. And became a Apple-lantern! And... like... Eats ponies and burns'em up and stuff. :iconrainbowdashcowerplz:

Ok. Maybe I suck at scary stories.

But anyway, I love the fact you used a warm light rather then a colder creepy light. AJ herself is creepy enough, not only the head, but the fact that you have just enough of a real horses anatomy in there to push it toward uncanny valley. With the warm lighting one can almost imagine some filly lost in a dark wood running towards it, thinking the light is held by a rescuer. No one would wander toward a spooky cold light.
Besides with the little flying glowing bits (fireflies? embers? foxfire? spirits? bits of hellfire?) and the white hot inferno inside of AJ's apple head, the light already has a sinister enough quality. At least in my opinion.
Love it.

Hehe, I guess your story is short but effective.

Really nice to read how the little things are seen by others, thanks!
Like the anatomy style (I tend to push the valley quite a bit haha), the flying bits of... thingies. but also the story with how another character possibly interacts or comes into play here. Glad to hear you're liking it :D

I'm afraid that my creative writing skills leave much to be desired. Still, good art like "Applejack-O-Lantern" tend to tell a number of stories to people who view it. Maybe someone else can do it.

Spoooooky! :iconapplejackscaredplz:

I like how you used an apple as her head as opposed to the pumpkin. Not only appropriate given the pony, but a nice twist on the legend itself.

There were things I couldn't resist changing into apples hehe, the addition in the name and the pumpkin. Especially if it actually works :D

Y'know, I think you managed to make a glorious new example of non-grimdark creepy here. That apple really makes her look off, in a good way. Beautiful texture work on said apple, on the leaf, on her body and on the ground most of all, it almost looks like a photomanipulation in the apple and the ground's case. Shading's marvellous here. Also, dat lighting focus. Great job.
