Always an apple amongst apples by AssasinMonkey Always an apple amongst apples by AssasinMonkey
Been working so much on Applejack, I realised I barely had her best companion! Winona!
The only time I made her was during my 24 hour Sweet Apple Acre session.

Initially planned this to be a more... light hearted piece, which sketches I've included in the WIP.
I think during sketching that made it even more heart breaking for me to go with this theme... but I... just... I hope the piece speaks for itself, but I'll have some words as well

I'd look at Winona as a true part of the Apple Family, to me she's best pet. Maybe also because of my view on Applejack of course :P
I guess sometimes we don't know how much we cared for what we had until we lose it.
She always seemed to smile, tail up, happy, loyal and to business when needed.
It kind of feels weird that this is my first real Winona I've done, but I'll certainly always remember her.

Kind of seemed to be a bit fast piece, but I focused a bit more on tone and feeling, so I felt like I didn't need to do a lot more, keeping it simple but effective.
Also, rain.

Edit: I think I've got the proper words to elaborate on this piece.
Even though it's a scene of loss, the good memories should outshine the darkness.
The times that will be remembered the longest.

I didn't want to make something outright depressing. Instead I wanted something sad that can also create a smile. Happy, the way she is.

I absolutely love this piece. My eyes started welling up as I took it in. This piece is absolutely stunning. From my perspective however, I could imagine the picture going into even more detail. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, why not make sure those thousand words stand out. Changing the location would be a great start. while the woods are good, it doesn't have the apple feel to it. On a hill overlooking an orchard or even the family farm were the first things that come to my mind. I love the rain look, you were spot on with that. The statue base could use some work making sure the lines are crisp and straight (it is a statue after all). A plaque could be add a lot of depth as well along with a caption like "Winona- a true member of the apple family" or even the title of the piece. The collar could be focused on more, it could even be Winona's actual collar, to me that would say a lot. I would focus on the apple in the picture, make it look fresh like the statue was just visited. An amazing addition to the piece would be a leash (although I don't think I've ever seen Winona using one) or even Aj's hat in the picture. Thank you for reading this, sorry if it wasn't very well written or you don't like my suggestions, this was my first Critique and I felt I had to because the picture spoke to me that much I believed it could be added to and made even stronger. I have doodled and drawn myself but am not nearly as good as yourself though I feel I have some artistic vision. I hope this helps. feel free to contact me if you want.

Much like the other Critique above mine, I find this to be an extremely touching piece of work. The rain was not only spot on, but had required a certain amount of skill and time to have the correct effect of sadness on the viewer. Particularly like the rain hitting the statue effect. However, compared to the other review, I'd prefer the statue as it is, the slightly uneven base and lack of a plaque only adds to the idea that this was a simple design, much like the apples themselves. Now onto things I agree about with the other critic, the apple could either look fresher to signify a recent visit or it could look slightly rotten, to show that time has passed. AJ's hat upturned in front of the statue with a pool of rainwater in it would have added a spectacular emotional effect to this image in my humble opinion.

Now to end off, someone once told me pictures and images are a window into someone else's life and this no doubt fill that role, a look into a world without Winoa.

Hope this has been helpful and fair to you, do message me if there are points i have listed that you disagree with, or specifically left out in order to achieve an effect I may have overlooked, cheers.

Too many people exclude Winona from deviations and stories about the Apple Family. Even the producers left Winona out of the most recent episode where Pinkie Pie discovers she's related to the apples. As far as I'm concerned she's more a part of the Apple's family then any of the other pony pets are to their respective owner's family. We all know Applejack loves her and the two of them certainly work well as a team. Losing Winona would probably crush poor Applejack's heart

Winona died and Applejack placed a statue of her on her grave to honor her.
That's beautiful.
This picture brings me tears and smiles at the same time.

I wonder who the statue makers in Equestria are? I'll bet it's a team of Earth & Unicorn Ponies-Earth to get the stones & do the carvings, Unicorn to "laser-etch" the outlines & fine-detail carving...

For some reason I think of Winona as a Border Collie or Border Collie mix and the Border Collies I know are always the happiest when they get to work - in rain or sunshine!

So this piece is fitting :) Love it.

The real legend (or story) is in Spanish and that one doesn't include the dog turning into stone part

I think this is absolutely beautiful! This isn't something that makes me sad when I see it, I can hear the rain, I love seeing the lighting and the colours, and it seems more comforting, than depressing, at least to me. I like the fact that she'll always be remembered, that she can be visited on this little patch of land (close to the Everee forest on the boundaries of the farm?). Maybe that's telling of what kind of person I am and what I believe, but I just wanted to say that this piece is absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for making it!

A very somber reminder of the mortality of all things in this world.

I know you were aiming for happy memories to be inspired by this scene, just that it's hard to remember something happy without the inevitable that comes with it, least in my case

Good piece, me likey

Well said; very well said indeed. What could I possibly add to that? Death is a natural part of the cycle of life; it's heartbreaking to have a loved one die (and that applies to loved pets just as much as everyone else), but the good times and the good memories will always stay with you, and noone'll be able to take them away.

Heh, "I barely had her best companion! Winona!"
And then you kill her. :p

I don't know. It's a sad theme on one hand, but the picture itself doesn't overly invoke sadness. The way you drew her, the little apple, her shiny collar, her happy expression, the rain effect.
It managed to invoke a tender smile, which is quite something indeed.

Nicely done. ^^

Hehe yea, the logic in my mind at times. I guess I took the concept of "Kill your darlings" a bit more literal here :P

It's nice to read it doesn't exactly portray as sad, which is a take on this I wanted to explore here.
Instead of putting the focus on what has been lost, trying to put it on the good memories that you have and let them outshine the darkness of the event.
Seeing as that is what got translated through this to the viewers, gives me a smile.

Hachiko's story is probably my favourite dog story out there, if not even one of the finest in general.
It certainly did came to mind when I was making this
initially I even almost made Winona sitting, but I thought it'd be too closely resembling that. Besides that I wanted to portray Winona's active farm side.

I'm glad you decided for a more upbeat image.

And yeah, Hachiko's tale is incredible. Probably because it's a true story.
